The six divisions described below provide the Sheriff Office’s overall management and delivery of public safety services to San Mateo County citizens and visitors.
The Administrative Services Division provides overall management, policy-setting, and procedural guidance, as well as civil, fiscal, and administrative support services. It acts as community liaison for the Sheriff’s Office and several law enforcement joint powers agencies to ensure that effective, responsive, and fiscally sound law enforcement services are provided.
The Support Services Division is comprised of over 100 sworn and non-sworn personnel that are assigned to the following bureaus or units: Bureau of Professional Standards, Court Security and Transportation Bureau, Training Unit, Coyote Point Firing Range, Relief Staffing Unit, Civil Enforcement Unit, Technical Services Unit, and the Records Bureau.
The Operations Division is comprised of our Patrol Bureau, San Carlos Police Bureau, and Transit Police Bureau, which provide public safety services to the unincorporated areas of the county, as well as contract services to various towns and cities within the county. The Division also includes our Emergency Services Bureau and Area Office of Emergency Services/Homeland Security, which provides emergency planning, activities, training, preparedness exercises, and field responses to San Mateo County and its cities and towns.
The Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division provides thorough and effective investigative and specialized services to the public and San Mateo County criminal justice agencies to ensure safer communities and provide the foundation for investigation and successful prosecution of criminals while promoting countywide and area-wide collaborative partnerships.
Multi-Jurisdictional Services provides specialized investigative and scientific analytical support to criminal justice agencies, the business community, and the general public in order to ensure public safety; provides a strong foundation for investigation and prosecution of alleged criminal activity; and allocates existing law enforcement resources efficiently and effectively through county- and area-wide collaborative partnerships with local, state, and federal partners.
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division works collaboratively within the judicial system and the community to provide safe and secure adult correctional facilities that protect public safety and promote positive inmate program services in order to reduce recidivism and improve the quality of life of those we serve.
