Undersheriff Carlos G. Bolanos has over 34 years of law enforcement experience. His career in law enforcement began in 1979, where he spent 12 years with the Palo Alto Police Department, promoting through the ranks to Lieutenant. He left the Palo Alto Police Department in 1991 to accept a position as a Police Captain with the Salinas Police Department. After three years with the Salinas Police Department, he was appointed Chief of the Redwood City Police Department in 1994. He was Chief of the Redwood City Police Department for 12 years, after which he was appointed to his current position as the Undersheriff of San Mateo County in 2007. As Undersheriff, his responsibilities include overseeing the day-to-day operation of the Sheriff’s Office organization in its entirety. Undersheriff Bolanos has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from the University of San Francisco and a Masters of Public Administration from California State University, East Bay. He is also a distinguished graduate of the California Police Officer Standards and Training Command College as well as the Naval Post-Graduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security Executive Leaders Program.
