The Property & Evidence Bureau is responsible for receiving, safely storing, and maintaining the integrity of evidence, found property, and property held for safekeeping. The Property & Evidence Bureau also releases property to its rightful owner, and facilitates the proper disposal of property in our possession.
These functions are vital to the criminal justice process, allowing for the effective prosecution of criminal offenders while confirming innocence; and allowing victims to find truth and closure as justice is served.
The Property & Evidence Bureau further serves the public by providing live scan and inked fingerprint services for background clearances for job applicants, licenses, and certifications.

To Recover Property Booked for Safekeeping
- Safekeeping property will be held for only 60 days, and then will be disposed of in accordance with law.
- Additional clearances must be obtained for firearms, please call 650-599-1570 for instructions.
To Recover Property Booked as Evidence
- Property booked in as evidence, must be cleared for release by the assigned detective/deputy.
- Property owners must contact the detective/deputy for the property clearance process to begin.
- Once the Property & Evidence Bureau receives clearance from the detective/deputy, then you may call (650) 599-1570 to schedule an appointment. You will need to provide your name and San Mateo County Sheriff's Office case number.
- Property booked in as evidence that is not picked up within 150 days after court adjudication will be disposed of without further notice.

Live Scan Fingerprint Processing

What is Live Scan?
Live Scan is inkless electronic fingerprinting. The fingerprints are electronically transmitted to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for completion of a criminal record check.
Is an appointment required for Live Scan service?
YES, we are not able to accept walk-in appointments.
Please be prompt for your appointment. If you are late, you will have to reschedule your appointment or wait for the next available opening. Missed appointments may be assessed a fee of $34.

1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. (last appt is at 3:30 p.m.)

What is the cost for Live Scan?
Our Live Scan rolling fee is $39. DOJ and FBI fees are additional. Other fees may apply if mandated by the Applicant's requesting agency.
The fee for inked fingerprint cards is $34 per card.
When making an appointment, applicants are encouraged to verify costs and fees applicable for the particular Live Scan service needed.

What do I need to bring to my Live Scan appointment?
The "REQUEST FOR LIVE SCAN SERVICE" (form BCII8016), should be already completed by the agency or person who is requesting you to be fingerprinted.
The form must be legible (typed or printed clearly). We will keep the original form, if you or the requesting agency wants a copy please bring the appropriate number of copies with you.
If the Applicant Submission, Contributing Agency Information, or Level of Service fields are not completed on your form, then we will not be able to process your transaction. This information must be supplied by the agency requesting you to be fingerprinted.

- Out of state Driver’s License of ID card
- Mexican Consulate card
*Minors not possessing a driver's license can use a student body card as a form of ID.
