On Tuesday, August 16, 2016, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Range staff was conducting a 24-hour patrol tactical rifle course at the Coyote Point Range. At approximately 1414 hours, Deputy Edgar Manilla was struck by a bullet fragment in his lower right leg. It is believed this fragment was caused by bullet splashback. The injury caused significant bleeding to Deputy Manilla’s lower right leg. You immediately rendered first aid to Deputy Manilla by applying both a dressing and tourniquet to the wound in an effort to prevent further blood loss.
Deputy Manilla was transported to San Francisco General Hospital for further and advanced medical treatment.
You transitioned from a training environment, without hesitation by quickly rendering medical attention and aid to Deputy Manilla in what could have potentially been a life threatening situation.
You are to be commended for your quick, selfless, professional and courageous actions.
