- The official salary range for Deputy Sheriff’s in the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office is $97,198.40 - $121,513.60 per year.
- A Deputy Sheriff’s total compensation can be supplemented by things such as overtime, night shift pay (5.74%), bilingual pay, and specialty assignment pay.
- Salaries for Deputy Sheriffs transferring from other agencies are commensurate with experience.
- Deputy Sheriff Lateral applicants must possess a valid California Basic POST Certificate
- Must take and pass the entry level physical agility Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) with a minimum score of 320
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who has applied for citizenship one year prior to applying for employment
- Must possess a high school diploma or a GED certificate
- Must possess a Class C California driver license or equivalent
- Must pass a background investigation, psychological exam, polygraph & medical evaluations
- Must not have any felony convictions or recent drug use
- Must be willing to work irregular hours, holidays, weekends & rotating shifts
- Must refrain from using tobacco products at any time after date of hire
- The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office operates a four team schedule.
- Teams 1 and 2 are dayshift schedules from 0600 hours to 1800 hours, with every other weekend off.
- Teams 3 and 4 are night shift schedules from 1800 to 0600 hours, with a rolling schedule having 4 weekends off / 4 weekends on.
In order to be eligible for specialty assignments with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, all Deputy Sheriff’s must complete the Jail Training Program. This program typically lasts four months; however, your assignment to the jail may be extended according to Sheriff’s Office staffing needs.
Depending on the needs of the Sheriff’s Office, you will begin your career here in one of our Correctional Facilities, Transportation orin Patrol with our Contract Cities / Unincorporated areas.

All new San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office safety employees are vested and therefore eligible to receive retirement payments after five years of service.
