The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office reserves the right to moderate any and all comments posted on the Sheriff’s Office social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Nextdoor, X, YouTube, etc.) The purpose of moderating content is to facilitate communications that are appropriate for all ages, courteous and respectful of others, and are related to matters, activities, programs, policies, or operations of the Sheriff’s Office.
Content posted on Sheriff’s Office social media accounts does not constitute legal or official notice to the Sheriff’s Office, nor the County, nor their employees. Members of the public should not utilize the Sheriff’s Office social media accounts to seek emergency services.
The Sheriff’s Office does not discriminate on the basis of viewpoints or opinions expressed. The Sheriff’s Office does, however, reserve the right to remove comments that contain the following types of content:
- Content that is not related to matters, activities, programs, policies or operations of the Sheriff’s Office
- Threatening, discriminatory, obscene, hateful or profane language or content
- Offensive terms that target protected classes
- Comments that promote, foster or perpetuate discrimination against protected classes
- Explicit sexual or harassing content, including links to such content
- Content that encourages, endorses or fosters illegal/unlawful activity
- Solicitation of commerce, commercial activities, fundraising or sponsorship
- Information that may compromise the safety or security of the public and/or public infrastructure
- Content containing personally identifiable information about individuals
- Personal attacks
- Confidential, sensitive or proprietary information
- Content that endorses any person campaigning for public office or relating to a ballot measure or proposition
- Links that are primarily commercial in nature, and/or charge a user-fee for access.
Comments on Sheriff’s Office accounts are monitored and may be subject to the California Public Records Act.
